Federico I, called 'the Barbarossa' was certainly one of the greatest Emperors Europe has ever known.
When he was only 24 years old, he became Duke of Svevia and fought beside the German King Conrad III during the second Crusade. After Conrad III's death, he became King of Germany himself and acquired the right to be crowned as King of Italy as well. He got through several conflicts with the Pope, who was afraid of losing his temporal power. The Barbarossa went down through Italy, attempting a conquest; he actually managed to became Emperor but he was then defeated in the battle of Legnano. In 1187 he left Germany for the third Crusade: however, he never saw Jerusalem, since he died misteriously while crossing the river Salef. According to the legend, he never actually died, but simply fell deeply asleep in the heart of the Kyffhaüser mountain. He's supposed to wake up again at the end of time to build a huge Empire, just as he had always dreamt to.
